More about Friday

Day 3 at KCRC was both productive and tiring.  Luke started out the day with physical therapy at 9:30~where he was propped up to a standing position for most of the 30 min session.  This really exhausted him and he became a little woozy.   He also threw a ball to me a few times.  At 10:00 I wheeled him down the hall to school.  The teacher had me write the names of 6 family members, each on a flash card.  I wrote: Ben, Andrew, Maleah, Logan, Carson, and Betty.  She then held up two at a time and asked Luke to point to the name that she says.  He got them all right without hesitation.  He identified his own name written out and when she showed him “Mom” he pointed to me.  It was so good to see that he was reading.   We established thumbs-up for “yes” and thumbs-down for “no”.  When the teacher asked Luke if he wanted her to read him a book he gave her a big thumbs-down.  But he gave her a thumbs-up for taking a break and sleeping.  I had to laugh at that.   At 11:30 I took him to occupational therapy, but he was quite tired from his meds so that was cut short.  Speech was at 1:00 and that was another good session.  Although he was still very tired he tried really hard and did great.  The therapist wrote commands on a pad of paper: Close your eyes, Open your mouth, Raise your eyebrows, and a few more…but he read and did everything that was written.  He identified common objects and demonstrated what to do with each one.   There were two more sessions scheduled for this afternoon, but he was too worn out to do them.  This evening Mom and Dad came up and we took Luke outside in his wheelchair for some fresh air.  He seemed to enjoy being out and played some tic-tac-toe with my Dad.  When asked if he wanted to be X’s or O’s, Luke held up both arms and made an X.  He is sleeping now and hopefully will have a peaceful night.  Pray for continued healing and strength for Luke and also for Grandpa Mark who is doing the night shift so Ben and I can get some sleep tonight.  I am feeling more positive today, and I’m sure that each day will be different.  I don’t want to make it seem like today was just smooth, because there were a lot of things Luke wouldn’t or couldn’t do.  But this is where we are right now, I just have to dig in and be strong for Luke to encourage and love him.  He’s an awesome boy!!!

  1. Ben and Lindsey,
This is a long race that will take lots of endurance. But look how far you’ve come (and how God has worked miracles in Luke). By the grace of God you will make it through and each day will be better than the last. Lindsey, just picture Luke as your trainer and look at this “challenge” through his eyes! Now the roles are reversed and you can be his personal trainer.

God is by your side, He’ll help you through.

  5. Dear Ben and Lyndsey,
Not a day goes by that you and your family are not in my heart, thoughts and prayers. So glad to get the updates. So glad to hear that Luke can see, and can read! Praise to our heavenly Father! Just wanted to send a short note, to let you know we are still praying, and thanking God, and praying, and praying more.
Our most Heavenly Father, We thank you, and praise you for the goodness and mercy you have shown in the miraculous healing work you have done in Luke. Please bless this little child of yours, and we pray you would continue to restore Him back to health. We pray for his eyes to recover, and for his speech to come back. Please Lord, keep Him safe in your strong arms. Protect him from from any evil and please place your angels all around him. Be with his entire family, and especially his exhausted Mom and Dad. Give them an extra measure of strength, because we know without you it would be impossible to get through all of this. Thank you for the wonderful support system Your Church has been for them. We pray all these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

  7. His rehab. sounds so good from what you are writing, I think it is incredible considering where he was just a week ago. God is so good and we are praying for great things. The first thing the kids wanted to do when we got back from vacation was to check Luke’s blog! You all are on our minds and in our prayers.

  15. Ben & Lindsey –
It is just awesome to see the progress that Luke is making. We have been following his blog all along and have been praying. Our little girl likes to see the pictures that you post on his blog also. We just wanted to let you know we are praying and just encourage you both to keep pressing on. Our God is an awesome God and even though we don’t understand everything in His plan we know it is best. When I went through a tough time in my life I was encouraged with some words someone sent to me in a card and that was to make sure that God is always in the driver seat and us in the passenger seat.
We will continue praying that his progress continues. That is wonderful! Praise the Lord!

  24. I am praying for Luke as he recovers. My brother had brain trauma earlier this year due to a car accident, so I understand your concerns with Luke’s injuries.
Luke seems to be making huge progress, especially if he’s responding and reading. That’s wonderful. That should encourage your heart and give hope to you.
God is good. I will continue to pray for your family as you all continue to heal through this process.
