Luke Looks Great!

This is Jolene, Lindsey’s aunt from Florida.  Rich and I arrived in Virginia last night and we got to go with Glenn, Betty, Andrew and Maleah to see Luke today.  It was great to finally be able to give Ben and Lindsey a hug in person and let them know how much we have been thinking about them.  Luke was sleeping when we got there so we visited with Ben and Lindsey until he woke up.  Lindsey spent the night with Luke and said he had a restless night and woke up quite often so he was tired today.

When Luke woke up, Lindsey went in and told him that we were there to see him and asked him if he wanted to see us.  We got two thumbs up and a smile and then I got a hug from Luke.  WOW did that make me feel good!  His smile is something to see and will make your day.  He is communicating very good with a thumbs up and thumbs down for yes and no.  I also noticed that he really seemed to know when somone would come into his room or even walk by his room.  He would try and follow them with his eyes.

It was neat to see how Andrew and Maleah talk to him and how much they love him.  Maleah hugged his legs and called him “her precious Luke”.  You can tell that they really miss him and can’t wait for him to get home.  He is such a sweet little guy and you just want to pick him up and hold him tight.  I remember taking care of him when he was just a little guy and how he liked to do things for himself.  I think that independent spirit and determination will really help him with his rehabilitation.

Uncle Jeff, Aunt Shea, Carson and Savannah also came to see him today.  This was Carson’s first time to see Luke and show him the cast on his leg.  He got to sit on the bed and talk to Luke.  They gave him an early birthday present (his 8th birthday is tomorrow) and he opened the card and gift by himself.  The card was a musical card and he liked that.

Luke has a stuffed monkey that lays beside him on his bed.  Shea asked him if the monkey looked like her or Uncle Jeff and he pointed to Jeff and got a big grin on his face.  His sense of humor is there and he likes to tease even now.  Shea also sang his favorite song from Bible School and Luke did the motions to the song.  When Ben got back from lunch he put the CD in and he did the motions again while the song was playing.  He is worshipping and praising God from his hospital bed!!  They are able to  put Luke in a wheelchair now and take him outside.  Ben did that and he was outside for awhile with the group.  Rich and I gave him a Virginia youth sized basketball today after lunch and he threw it several times to Rich.  Rich then bounced it on the cement and asked Luke if he wanted to bounce it.  Luke put it in his hand and tried to bounce it just like Rich had done.

It was so good to see Luke and how good he is doing.  I know we came in after some really tough days for Luke and the family.  Ben and Lindsey are so calm and good with him.  You can see how much they love and adore their son and that they will do everything they can to help him.  Keep praying for them that they will continue to have strength to make it thru the days ahead.  Also, pray for Luke as his days are going to be busy and tiring with lots of different types of therapy.  We are looking forward to spending a few more days here and being with Luke again tomorrow for his 8th birthday!  Please pray that Luke has a great birthday and that he will soon be able to speak!

  1. thank you so much for sharing Jolene – so glad that you and Rich can be there and spend some time with Luke. He is a precious boy and a miracle. I remember when we were in Colorado and I was praying – it was like I saw spots of colors when I closed my eyes – I had to think, maybe it’s balloons they are going to have when they celebrate that Luke gets to come home! God is good… we are praying…

  4. Once again I am up wayyy past my bedtime reading about Luke whom I keep thinking about as David. He has faced many Goliaths and with God’s help, he has taken down giant, after giant, after giant. What a courageous, brave boy! God is so proud of him and so, so pleased with you, his parents, his family for the way you love him. Keep fighting Luke! Keep praying people! Keep loving him family! God’s arm is not too short to save. HE is good and HE hears. HE inhabits the praises of His people and we praise him for Luke; for the Yoder family!

  7. Luke is on a healing track….. keep brining his brother and sister over and his friends when allowed…. this may encourage him to want to talk more….

You are a strong christian family and God will answer your prayers as he has already.

We have been through the exact same thing you are doing now. It will be tiring and challenging BUT the rewards will be great.
We are thankful for the gains Luke is making and pray for a full recovery.

  26. Ben and Lindsey, we have been praying for you and Luke since Travis heard the news from Ryan S. the afternoon of the accident. We did not want to let Luke’s birthday pass without expressing to you how much we enjoyed teaching Luke in Sunday School when he and our Nathaniel were in Kindergarten. We both remember Luke as one of the most gifted and spirited children we had ever taught. His knowledge of Bible stories was quite impressive… but Luke also understood their applications for the heart! We also remember how much he did love singing and being with friends!

Everyday we pray that Luke will be fully restored and that you as parents will have the strength that only God can give… as you care for Luke and wait on the Lord.

We pray that one day Luke will have the privilege of reading the story recorded by his loving family in the entries of this blog. For we believe that God is writing Luke’s testimony day by day and that it is going to be incredible. We are blessed by the opportunity of watching it unfold as we eagerly read the updates. We know that Luke will one day be overwhelmed by God’s protection and love for him and that he will give Him all the glory.

We hope that Luke’s 8th birthday has been a day of happy memories and continued hope.
