More Progress

Luke had a good day today.  He continues to show great improvements each day and certainly from one week to the next.  His therapists are excited by his progress and some are actually trying to think of some things for him to do that will be a challenge.  He is really making great strides and is quick to pick things up.  He has adapted incredibly well to wearing the halo.  Again, remember it weighs about 8 pounds, sticks out a good ways from his head, and he cannot rotate his head in any direction.   He sits up, stands up, climbs into bed, eats, gets dressed and ready in the morning, and walks (either with a walker or holding our hand) all this pretty much on his own.  We, of course, are always close for assistance if he needs it, but I am amazed how strong he is becoming.   During PT he is shooting hoops, squatting to get bean bags off low stools, climbing stairs, and riding a three-wheel bike they have here.  They try to make him shoot equally with both hands, but he doesn’t want to because it messes up his perfect form.  And the other night while in his wheel chair he started dribbling a basketball given to him for his birthday.  He’s still got the touch… I love it!  Today in speech, his therapist was again amazed at how much better his memory has gotten over the past week.   These are just a few highlites of the last couple days.

Once a week Ben and I have a meeting with all the therapists and doctors, they call it a Family Meeting.  During this time, we talk openly about Luke’s progress and goals for him.  We met yesterday at 3:00, and discussed last weeks goals all of which he surpassed and so they came up with some new ones.  I am so happy to say that today he pretty much reached the new set of goals as well.  GO LUKE!  So some great news, we will most likely be bringing Luke home this week sometime.  He is so ready and we are too!  The plan as of now is for Luke to continue some therapy at KCRC as an outpatient a few times a week.  We don’t know how long he will need all the different therapies, and some will not be necessary even next week , but Luke will answer that question as he continues to progress.

Some prayer requests would be:  ~For his vision to continue to heal and improve

~For physical strength and stamina

~Continued improvements for his short-term memory and new learning concepts

~Complete healing of his C-Spine – MRI date is August 28th, halo will come off if it is healed.  If not then 4 more weeks or a possible Fusion (the original surgery he was supposed to have)

~A smooth transition and patience for Luke as he gets back into his normal life

Thank you all so much for standing and fighting for Luke!  We went to church Sunday for the first time since the accident and were overwhelmed by the support of everyone.  God has performed miracle after miracle in Luke’s life – even from the womb when his heart problem was first discovered, and Luke went on to lead an extremely active life with no limitations – and again he was under attack  through this terrible accident. But God has shown himself to be powerful and unshakable!  All of you have joined with us in prayer and have been fired up over the healing, mighty power of God.

~Lindsey

  1. Praising the Lord with you! I am so excited to see how God has worked on Luke’s behalf, as well as yours, Ben and Lindsey. We truly serve a faithful and sovereign God! We are still continuing to pray for Luke and for you as a family as many things will be different when Luke does come home. Know that you are being prayed for every single day and that it will continue!

Luke, I don’t know you, but I am so proud of you and how you have brought honor to the Lord in your dealing with this. You have done better than alot of adults would do in the same circumstances and situation. Keep up the good work and we will keep up our end in praying for you daily.

God bless you and keep you in His everlasting love and arms!

  2. Ben, Lindsey and family,
We have been praying for you and Luke ever since Sheila shared the news with our church. We are thankful that we have a God who performs miracles and who is always available no matter what hour of the day or night we call on Him. It is wonderful to read the progress that Luke has made and how many people have helped out in numerous ways. We will continue to pray that God will continue the healing in Luke and give you all strength, grace, and patience.

  4. What a boost it must be for all of you to know that Luke may get to go home this week. Our family has been and will continue to pray for complete healing in Luke. Even our 2 year old, when he can’t find his bracelet (as he so often seems to lose thisngs!), says, where’s my Luke? God is good, and will continue his healing works in Luke.

  6. Lindsey,
This is such an incredible report. I am overwhelmed by God’s goodness in your lives. We have a photo of Luke on the fridge and I “talk to it” every day…We love him and we are so thrilled that he is showing so many signs of beings his “old self” with his humor, spunk and even cool basketball moves. GOD IS GOOD.

We have moved forward with plans for the night of worship benefit on Saturday, September 19 at Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazerene. We will print flyers soon and begin getting the word out. We want to exalt the Lord together and thank Him for all His goodness to you. We also want to BLESS YOU with an offering. Any of us could one day find ourselves in a situation like yours and we would need support. We are called to care for each other, thank you for allowing the Body to hold you up during this time.

  10. Lindsay, we have thought about Luke every day here in our office. We have also thought about you, Ben and the kids, and how much encouragement you have given Luke to have the strength to overcome this huge obstacle. While I admire you saying how strong Luke is, It is God, You, Ben and the rest of the family who instilled that will to recover. My hats off to all of you. Welcome back to Rockingham county this week Luke!!

  11. We put a prayer request in our Church bulletin this week for Luke. Part of it reads “he so badly wants to return to his home and younger siblings”. It was so exciting to read that this may become a reality this week. No doubt God will use this normalcy of home life to bring healing to all of you! Yes, God is at work in all of us through Luke.

  13. I just explained Luke’s progress to my children, who have never met Luke, but know Mark and have been praying for Luke throughout, and my daughter said, “when he feels better, can he come over and play?” So, we look forward to setting up that playdate soon!

  14. We have never met…but we have a son named Luke who is eight. He has faithfully been praying for your Luke since the Sunday we heard about his accident. Cecil Wright told our congregation – Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren. As our Luke played baseball over the past month, I prayed for you and your Luke in the hospital. In addition, we were at the UVa hospital the day of his accident. My Luke was admiring the helicopter as it landed at the emergency room. I commented to him that it was cool, but it also meant that someone was hurt so we prayed a little prayer for whoever was in the helicopter. We don’t know if it was your Luke but we feel such a connection to your little boy. We are so thankful that he is progressing so miraculously…praise God! Our Luke got an armband at the yard sale on Saturday….we will continue to pray. May our Lord contiue to sustain you all ~Suanne Scrogham

  20. Oh, how exciting!! Brant will jump for joy. As another post reads, Brant don’t know Luke but from the moment he heard me talking to Sharon about the accident he was so concerned and told me…”Mom he WILL be ok, I just know it.” And every night asks me how Luke is and we pray for him and your family. It is so wonderful for children to SEE God does answer prayer and all we have to do is “…be still and KNOW that I am God!” Sometimes my child does that better then I do! We are so happy for you all!!!

“Praise to the Lord! the Almighty, the King of Creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, Now to His temple draw near,
    Join me in glad adoration!”

We know God will heal him in every way! We are dying to see you all again! Our computer died so we feel disconnected at times, luckily we have good friends who let us borrow their computers. 37. Dear Lindsey and Ben,

When Amy told me of Luke’s accident, I immediately called our church and held Luke in prayer and have been following Luke’s progress through this blog (even when Mark and I were on a vacation out WEST!). Luke’s recovery and your strength is nothing short of miraculous. I am so happy to hear that Luke will be home and “routine” can begin to set in as it will bring comfort for you.
I am also praying that your family is able to adopt one of the Southeastern Guide Dogs as a companion for Luke.
I see your parents must be home now..I will stop by to see them this week. How blessed they are to have YOU as their daughter. Mark sends his best also.
