Lukeyoder's Blog

Just another weblog

DSC_1661The halo is off!!!  Praise God!  This is a happy day and Luke said, “I feel like I could almost fly!”.   We went to UVA today not knowing the results from Friday’s MRI, but soon Sarah came in fitting Luke for a collar and we knew it was coming off.  They did it right in the office, Luke was awake and sooo brave.  He will have to wear the collar for 8 weeks and then have a 3-D scan done to make sure the ligament is completely healed.  The doctor said the MRI pictures were great and it seems to be healing very nicely.  They are being really cautious with this injury, it is very serious.  Luke will have to keep the collar on all the time except to shower or bathe and he will have to still hold back on the activities until the 8 weeks is up.  Dr. Jane (his neurologist) was very excited to see Luke and said “Luke, I am very proud of you!  It’s great to be with you today.”  He will look at the scan to make sure that all of Luke’s head fractures have healed before they officially “turn him loose”.  After the doctor appointments we went up to the PICU with Sarah to see the doctors and nurses who took such good care of Luke those first weeks.  They were all so happy to see him and he was as smiley and chatty as always!

This has been a wonderful day…we are so thankful and in awe of the healing God has done and is doing in Luke.  On the way home we stopped for smoothies (by Luke’s request), and while Ben was inside getting them Luke asked me to come sit by him in the backseat for a minute.  I went back and he grabbed my hand and said, “Mom, I want to pray with you and thank God for healing me.  I am so happy.”  He said a very sweet, sincere prayer and then gave me a big hug…it was awesome!  I keep hugging him, it feels so good to be able to feel his body and not the vest.    Tonight we had crab legs to celebrate, one of Luke’s favorites, and boy did he dig in!   So tonight we have full stomachs and very full hearts!!!  Thank you all for the constant prayers and all of the encouragement through comments on the blog, cards, phone calls, meals, visits…everything has been amazing.  We can’t say it enough, you all have been a huge blessing to us.

Just had to tell you that today at dismissal Lori Blosser called in to me on the walkie talkie and said that Luke’s grandma just came through the carpool line and said she had just received a text saying Luke was that very moment having his halo removed! So I announced to everyone in the gym what was happening and you should have heard the cheers, applause, and clapping! The school is rejoicing with you and we are so anxious for Luke to return! Praise the Lord!

  16. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired an weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:29-31 God gave me these verses for Luke the week after his accident. It is beyond words to see God bring this words to fulfillment in Luke’s life. All praise be to God!

  23. I am in awe of the mighty and miraculous healing works of God, and how He has displayed them in your precious little Luke’s life. He is now a living testimony of hope for the hopeless, a testimony of the power of our God, and what He can do. I have seen God do many things, and care for my many needs, but I don’t think I have ever personally witnessed a miracle quite like Luke’s. I do believe many people have drawn closer to the Lord and in their prayer life, and many more will, as they see that our God answers our prayers, sometimes in huge and miraculous ways. Thank you Lord, for healing Luke, thank you Ben and Lyndsey, for sharing your hearts all along, and thank you Luke, for being so brave, and for remembering to give thanks, and even praying for others. You are a special young man of God, and I pray you will always keep your ears open to what the Lord has to say for you. I truly believe He has incredible plans for you! Love, Mrs. Crabtree (Nick’s Mom)

  24. PS Luke, I forgot to tell you but you have given me great encouragement also. To see what happened to you,and to see God heal you, gives me great hope that God can heal Nick’s Dad who has been sick for a long time…and we know God has a purpose. But whenever I start to lose hope, I will just think of you, and be encouraged all over again. You will continue to be a blessing in my life, even though we haven’t really even gotten to know each other that well yet. You have persevered well. If you need some friends to play board games and things like that, Nicholas likes to do that and could come over, and he also likes to play Wii. If you don’t have on at your house you could come here and play. I will call your Mom to see if Nick could get together with you! I am so happy your Halo is off! Oh, and crabmeat is my very, very favorite food too!

  31. Well I am crying again. Your entries always do that to me. I am just so excited that the halo came off. I could not stop thinking about it all day yesturday I was so glad when I got the text saying it was coming off. When I think back to the day it happened I still tear up, because I don’t think I have ever been that scared in all my life. When we heard the screams and not knowing who it was then running down and seeing what happened it was just such a nightmare I could not believe it was happening. I just remember lifting my hands and crying out Jesus, that is all I could say, and I just knew he would heal him, that he had to. Lindsey you were so brave even from the beginning, I would have never done so good. You are such a strong person, and I admire you so much. I can’t believe the time that has passed and how far Luke has come, it IS truly a miracle. I don’t know how anyone could know this story, and not believe there is a God, and know He loves us all. Luke has touched so many people, and I know he will continue to his whole life. He loves the Lord and everyone will see God’s love through him! Luv you guys and wish I was coming with Jeff this weekend. Me and the kids will come the first weekend in Oct. Luke We Love You!!!!

  42. Lindsey,
I don’t know if you remember me. I am a friend of Maretta’s. We were actually pregnant at the same time with our boys. I remember asking frequently how you were doing during the pregnancys.

We have been keeping track of this blog. The boys have really taken to Luke. Often when they are talking about him, it sounds as if he is one of their friends. They often pray for him before bed.

The day that Luke came home from the hospital, I told the boys and there were all kinds of “WOO HOO’s”, “YIPPEE’s”, etc. This afternoon, I told the boys about the halo coming off, and we had a repeat performance!!

Luke’s story is truly a miracle! We will continue to pray!
